Lord Macaulay’s Address to the British Parliament 2nd February 1835

Here is the speech :

“I have travelled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a begger, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such caliber, that I do not think we would ever counquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will loose their self esteem, their native culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation. ”

Probably Macaulay (an english) understood more , the strength and power of Indian culture , education and heritage more than most Indians do today.

Baba Ramdev dictates : Its time to reverse the all the downfall of the Indian culture and heritage that took place in the past 5000 years.

The opening sentence of the alleged statement by Lord Macaulay “I have travelled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a begger, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country…..” made me check the authenticity of the reported statement, because that was not the situattion of local population at the fag end of Moghal dynasty.
Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Babington_Macaulay,_1st_Baron_Macaulay , has following information:

Lord Macaulay was in India and served on the Supreme Council of India between 1834 and 1838. He introduced English education in India through his famous minute of February 1835 (So he was in India in Feb 1935, and could not address the British Parliament on 2 February, 1935). There is no bias involved. Just to find the truth. (This refers to namaroopa says: July 31, 2010 at 8:15 am)
This is what is available on the reference below.

The passage to which the term refers is from his Minute on Indian Education, delivered in 1835. It reads,

“It is impossible for us, with our limited means, to attempt to educate the body of the people. We must at present do our best to form a class who may be interpreters between us and the millions whom we govern; a class of persons, Indian in blood and colour, but English in taste, in opinions, in morals, and in intellect. To that class we may leave it to refine the vernacular dialects of the country, to enrich those dialects with terms of science borrowed from the Western nomenclature, and to render them by degrees fit vehicles for conveying knowledge to the great mass of the population.” This is what Macaulay said about India and its Education… “

    Hi Mahen,
Iam in total agreement with your statement: “From your very writing we all can safely say Lord Macaulay have achieved his plan so accurately and correctly that our Dr. O. P. Sudrania says after 180 years that he was great.”. Her name correctlly describes her character in Srimad Bhagavatma that: this world will be full of Sudras of evil mentality with lack of understanding and reasoning and will be the source of destruction of this world”. All glories to out Indian Culture!!!

I am not able to understand that why we Bhartiyas (strictly no Modern Indians)always worry about other’s testifications.
Can’t we take it granted that whatever GOOD had been done by Bhartiyas and refined GOOD (such statements)said by others about BHARAT, cleverly and cunningly got washed by foreigners and modern Indians before and after Independence.
There was a confusion about the place where this statement was made.
Mydear Friends, British Parliament (assembly) was only in India as this is known to everyone that in England they call their LOK SABHA as House of Commons. Therefore it might be possible that this statement was made by some Macaulay in Bharat only.

    The conclusion is,
First of all, we need not to get any Certificate from others about BHARAT’s GOODNESS and
second we should now be RIGID to all Good in our SANSKRITI and PAST and don’t accept any Bad of our BHARAT from anybody on this universe.

  10. M.L.GUPTA says:

The statement attributed to Lord Macaulay needs to be verifed from the records of British’parliament. If true, should be circulated widely in India and abroad.

  11. Mahen says:

    Dear Dr. O. P. Sudrania,
Sincerely, this is what the effect your Lord, Lord Macaulay had intended, designed and devised. From your very writing we all can safely say Lord Macaulay have achieved his plan so accurately and correctly that our Dr. O. P. Sudrania says after 180 years that he
    was great ….!

You realize why the educated are not in politics or proving themselves more useful than the less educated? Please also understand these education systems proved useful to eliminate the inner spirits and forced our majority to surrender for slavery ….!

It is our real misfortune of my citizens that we cold not even dare think to change now as appropriate when we notice the wrong. Rather than just reading and circulating let us all say, we shall spend our rest of the life for this change… essential to change the systems for the good of my future generations… …!

  12. Hitesh,

Your comment though right, is it not a little misplaced? What Baba Ramdeo is talking about is the Macaulay’s very and highly controversial as well as yet to be proved – correct or incorrect; as I have done a lot work on this. I am not denying the ghost of corruption in India. But the above misquote of Macaulay is a different issue.

For everyone on this blog, I would like to clarify that this quote has not been categorically proved to be of Macaulay. So it will be wiser to refrain from it. Though the effects of his actual available Minutes of both 1833 and 1835 are even bad enough. By quoting an unproved or misplaced phrase weakens our own view point. Further, remember, you are on a medium which is open to the world. You do not have everybody thinking in your way. Just a suggestion.

    God bless.

    Dr. O. P. Sudrania

  13. Hitesh says:

Every country in world including developed countries tries for “EXPORT PROMOTION and IMPORT RESTRICTION”- What about so big trade deficit in India? Arent we downgrading our currency through increasing trade deficit. Lets be trade positive and increase value of our currency.

Corruption rules is even used by foreigh MNCs. I have an example in front of me. A MNC has lauched CBI enquirues when they loss contract to a domestic company. This is India…..How a Govt Officer can think to fight against Govt, MNC, CBI, Own deptt, …..How can he be strong enough to fight. I therefore proposed that all govt expenses should be transparent and each citizen should be authorised to see govt expenses of even a rupee.
Only transparency in govt work can remove corruption

Very eager to say many much facts. Very thankful to Rajivjo Dixt and Baba Ramdev. I still remember twenty years ago, Rajivji has came to my school for lecture on Swadeshi-the true swadeshi fighter- I have lots of respect and support for him

Excellent job. Go ahead, full India is following you. JAI HIND
